The heart of medieval Spain. – What to know before visiting.

Whenever you think of medieval Europe, castles and fortifications come to mind. The city of Burgos offers a look at the past and proudly invites locals and visitors to discover its long history. There have been humans in the area for at least 800 000 years, yet the city was founded in the year 884. So the city has a shared history between the Celtics, Romans, Visigoths, and other groups that inhabited the area. During the middle ages, it became a fortified village; you can see this in the Castle of Burgos, located on the hill of San Miguel, or in Arco de Santa María, one of the former 12 gates to enter the city. Also, several religious buildings are essential to Burgos, such as Burgos Cathedral, a gothic church from 1221, or Cartuja de Miraflores, a former charterhouse from 1442 monument open to the public, located on the outskirts of the city and accessible by different means.

The city is also part of the Cantar del Mio Cid, one of the most famous epic poems of Spanish literature, and the city is an open museum of this literary classic. Visit Plaza Mío Cid, where you can see the monument to this historical figure, Solar del Cid, where the house of the Cid was, and visit the Glera del Arlanzón, where several parts of the poem take place. Stay in the city during Burgos Cidiano Festival. The town becomes a medieval scene through historical recreations, workshops, medieval markets, nighttime parades, guided tours, tournaments, conferences, music, theater for everyone who visits the city, and several activities, especially for families.
