A former industrial city with views to the future. – What to know before visiting

The Basque city of Barakaldo has over 2000 years of history and a recent industrial past that has transformed the city. The early history of Barakalo is related to the Cantabrian peoples against the Romans and other tribes in the region near the Nervión River. During the Middle ages, in the XIII century, Barakaldo was a rural town with a privileged location for mining commerce, which continued to grow in the industrial revolution era. The creation of the company Altos Hornos de Vizcaya in 1902 marked the history of Barakaldo. This company became one of the most important companies in the city and the country, directly related to the production of iron and its different uses. As a result, the town became an industrial icon of Spain for the XX century until its closure in 1996. Currently, you can discover the old buildings used by this company in different areas of the city, such as the Ilgner eraikina, a building from 1927 that worked as an electric power plant.

Barakaldo is transforming its industrial past and has become a sustainable spot focusing on social transformation and modern urbanism. That’s why you will see a city covered in green urban areas and walkable spaces. The Barakaldo Green Mesh is a new way to connect the city through its green places. This project is a network of connections between municipalities and their natural and cultural heritage for the use of pedestrians and cyclists. Come to the Barakaldo Botanical Garden, where you can discover a great diversity of plants in one of the biggest parks in the city. Or visit the outskirts of Barakaldo and discover El Regato. In this rural natural area, you can enjoy fresh air and trekking routes to enjoy the nature and historical sites of the area.

Next, discover the cultural side of Barakaldo. Visit the central plaza of Herriko Plaza, where locals enjoy everyday life near monuments and the Town Hall or Barakaldoko Udaletxea. Finally, enjoy the unique architecture of the Munoa Jauregia, a historic mansion from 1916 in style based on the Second French Empire and located within a spectacular garden in an English class, the Munoa Parkea.
