One of Spain’s most beautiful cities. – What to know before visiting

Córdoba is a city with a long history of being a multicultural spot in the Iberian Peninsula. The town was founded in 169 BCE during the Roman era. The city has remnants of the Roman civilization, such as the Roman Bridge of Córdoba, initially constructed in the I century BCE, and the Templo Romano from the I century.

The city lived a time of splendor during the Arabic era, transforming it into the capital of the Emirate of Cordoba, a hub for art, knowledge, architecture, and culture, and one of the biggest cities at the time. During this period, Muslims, Christians, and Jewish populations lived in the same areas, and the Judería de Cordoba was the neuralgic center of the city. From this era, many of the significant constructions of the town came, such as the magnificent Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba and its gardens of Patio de Los Naranjos, the palace of Alcázar Andalusí de Córdoba, the Moorish baths of Baños del Alcázar Califal, the beautiful palace of Medina Azahara in the outskirts of the city, and the house of La Casa Andalusí. These constructions still embellish the city, and many are considered Unesco World Heritage Sites worth discovering and visiting.

After the death of Almanzor; the chancellor of the Caliphate of Córdoba, in the year 1002; Córdoba started a decline. However, it was until the year 1236 which the city began the second era of construction and splendor, such as the construction of the Córdoba Synagogue, the church of Parroquia San Hipolito, and the structure of the Alcazar of the Christian Monarchs started. Today after many years of transformation of the city, Córdoba still is one of the best-preserved cities in Spain and one of the most extensive historical centers of Europe, combining elements of the modern city in the surroundings and the beautiful, well-preserved historical areas.

With a significant cultural, architectural, and gastronomical heritage, Córdoba is a place to discover, with hidden spots everywhere, stories to be told in every corner, and unique sights to enjoy while you visit this great city.
