A charming spot to relax and discover Mallorca. – What to know before visiting.

Deià is a charming spot on the mountains of Tramontana on the Island of Mallorca that has inspired many artists, and it is the perfect spot to enjoy the island’s natural side. Located on the Northwest side of Mallorca, Deià offers unique views of the Mediterranean Sea from its cliffs, closeness to the shore, and special accommodations and rural houses.

It has roots as a farming and fishing village during the Arabic occupation from the X to the XIII century. After, it became a Christian village under the control of the neighboring town of Valldemossa until its independence in the XVI century. However, still, Deià preserves its rural town feel, the Moorish layout of its streets, and the unique decor of some of its most notable buildings.

Walk around its streets and come upon the XVI-century church of Sant Joan de Deià, located in the Plaza de la Iglesia on the village’s highest point and one of its most important buildings, with a religious museum inside and the lookout of Mirador de l’Església. One of the peculiar spots to discover around this area is the cemetery of Cementeri municipal de Deià, where the remains of many of the artists who fell in love with Deià rest, such as the British writer and poet Robert Graves, the Spanish impressionist painter Antoni Ribas Prats, and the Spanish modernist painter Antonio Gelabert.

Visit the outskirts of Deià, the house museum of Son Marroig, a historical building from the XV century with impressive views of the sea. You can explore the private collections of Archduke Luis Salvador from Austria from the XIX century, surrounded by gardens, a marble temple, and excellent lookouts to enjoy the sea. Or visit the house museum of the British poet Robert Graves La Casa de Robert Graves, where this writer lived from 1929 until his death. Here you can explore the space where the artist used to live, learn about his works, and enjoy its garden.
