In the southwestern of the Iberian Peninsula, in the Province of Cádiz and following the route of the Andalusí Legacy is located Jerez de la Frontera, a city known for its wine, its horses and bulls, flamenco dance, and motorcycle competitions. A town with 3000-year-old history influenced by the Phoenician civilization, the roman empire, Arabic knowledge and culture, and an essential legacy of the reconquest process of Spain. It is the heart of the Sherry wine production and, for centuries, has had a unique role in the economy and culture of the region. Its privileged location makes this city a perfect spot for visitors who want to enjoy and learn about the Spanish culture at its finest, with plenty of accommodations that suit any budget and plenty of things to do and discover.

Our recommendations on areas to stay:

Stay near the town’s central district around the neighborhood of Santiago, where you will find all the amenities you need to make your family trip an incredible experience. Across Calle Lealas, you will have pharmacies, supermarkets, parks like Atalaya Garden, and even museums like the Palace of Time at a walkable distance and not too far from the city’s historic center.
  • For a luxury stay, you can find accommodations in the city center near the restaurant El Gallo Azul an icon of the city, located in Calle Larga with its vibrant history. A city with a great offer

Jerez de la Frontera is an inviting city that welcomes visitors with various activities during their stay. Its architectural and cultural heritage is of great pride to the locals; you can discover museums, churches, wine cellars, abbeys, convents, and palaces. If you visit this city, you will never get bored; its cultural activities, like flamenco dance and bulería, are favorites among locals. There are festivals such as the Festival de Jerez, celebrated at the beginning of the year between February and March, bringing the best of the folkloric dances of the Spanish culture.

You will learn its long history through its iconic fortifications in the historic center, such as the Alcazar de Jerez with its Almohad architecture and mosque from the Muslim Era and its stunning views of the city, or the Palace del Viceroy Lacerna with a neoclassical style just a few meters away.

And if motorsports are part of your trip, Jerez de la Frontera is for you. It is a world-famous spot for motorcycle races in the Circuito de Jerez, beside the Museo del Motor on the city’s outskirts. It is also an excellent spot for horse riding practitioners. Jerez has been called “the city of the horses” since the development of this sport in the region in the XV century, and one of the most favorite activities of this kind is the Feria del Caballo, a fair to show the best horses of the region and celebrated at Parque de González Hontoria. You can practice this sport in Centro Hipico Jerez and Ganadería Alpende.

        • The city has several parks that offer great spaces for kids. Santiago is a great residential neighborhood, it has parks such as Picadueñas Park, where you can find playgrounds for children, and it’s close to a soccer field
        • You can visit the zoo and botanical garden of the Zoobotánico Jerez nearby. It has over 900 animals from all around the world and several conservation programs for them.
        • Jerez de la Frontera offers plenty of museums with activities for children to learn about the city’s history. One is the Municipal Archaeology Museum of Jerez de la Frontera, just 450 meters from Plaza de Santiago. We also recommend visiting the Museo de la Miel y las Abejas Rancho Cortesano on the city’s outskirts 25 minutes by car from Santiago Neighborhood, as a perfect family day trip and learning about it the history of bees and their importance in nature.

This neighborhood is a residential area close to the city center with amenities that will make your trip safe and easy. In the Calle Taxdirt, you will find several pharmacies, restaurants, and a hospital on the way to the Church of Santiago.

Wine cellars, restaurants, and theaters through historic streets

Jerez de la Frontera is a unique destination to enjoy the best of Spanish culture. The region of Jerez has been famous for the wine since the Phoenicians brought it around 1100 BCE, and have evolved since then to become a city symbol. Discover the region of Sherry wine and stay in the city’s central district within meters of a historic wine cellar or bodega such as Diez Mérito, an iconic bodega near the city’s historic center, and learn about the denomination of origin. At the same time, you walk 800 meters from Calle Larga and taste excellent local wines in the Centro de Dinamizacion Enoturística de Marco de Jerez or take a taxi from the center to the Galeria del Jerez to see unique objects related to the wine history.

We recommend staying close to the city center and enjoying the beautiful architecture between streets and passageways. Eat at a Michelin Star restaurant such as Mantúa, and try dishes based on the local traditions from the Spanish sea and mountains or go to LÚ Cocina y Alma and experience a creative French-Andalucian cuisine, both paired with a catered selection of local wines.

End your day with a 5-minute walk to the Teatro Villamarta. Enjoy the plays and concerts they have programmed, or feel like a local with a show at the flamenco theater Tablao Flamenco La Bailaora-Jerez before having a short walk back to your luxury accommodation in the center of all the cultural activity of the city.

        City life on a budget

You can experience Jerez de la Frontera without hurting your wallet. The city has a great variety of things to do while on a budget. We recommend taking advantage of the beautiful parks and plazas near Alameda de las Angustias with affordable accommodations in the southeast of the city’s historical center, in the central district of Jerez. It is close to the train station and connects to several bus stops to move quickly around. Take a 10-minute walk to Alameda Vieja Park, where you can walk through beautiful areas with trees, fountains, and kiosks.

The whole city offers accommodations at a reasonable price, even in the historical center, so that you will take the city as your own quickly and cheaply. And don’t worry, plentiful and cheap food options are available everywhere in the city, always with a good cup of wine like the sherry bar Tabanco Platero, close to the Real Iglesia de San Dionisio Areopagita.
