An important city for many civilizations. – What to know before visiting.

Lleida has seen the passing of several civilizations throughout the ages. Its origins date back to the VI century BCE when the Pre-Roman groups of the Iberian Ilergetes settled in the area during the Bronze Age. Later they allied with the Cartage to fight against the rising threat of a Roman invasion. In the year 206 BCE, they fell under Roman rule up until 375 CE, then the Visigoths dominated the area until the Muslim era in 719 CE. You can visit the remnants of this era in the Castell de la Suda, a Mudejar-style fortification from the IX century. The Christian reconquest would come in the year 1120, and most of the city’s iconic buildings came from medieval times.

Discover the monumental architecture of Lleida by visiting one of the city’s most visible landmarks, the old cathedral of La Seu Vella. This Romanesque church from 1278 with a strategic location on the city’s hill overlooking the town. Also, discover the medieval era castle from the XII century of Castell de Garden, and learn about the Knights Templar architecture and history during this era. Next, visit the medieval hospital of  Antic Hospital de Santa Maria, built in the XV century in a Catalonian Gothic style. Finally, explore the city’s religious influence and history by visiting the Catedral nova de Lleida, a neoclassical cathedral from 1790 in response to the military occupation of the old cathedral during and after the War of Spanish Succession.

This area also has several museums to keep learning about the city’s long history, such as the Museu de Lleida, where you can learn about the town.
