The city of Lorca is a unique spot in the heart of Murcia. Known by many names, Lorca counts with a high diversity that you can see reflected in its architecture and traditions. The area that today holds the city has been inhabited uninterruptedly since the late neolithic, around 5500 years ago. During the Roman era, the city was known as Elicroca, which was vital in the Vía Augusta between other places of the roman empire. Over time the roman city had a slow process of Christianization that continued to shape Lorca’s history.

Discover the Roman elements of the city by visiting the Columna Miliaria in Calle Corredera. This column marked the Via Augusta on a main road of Lorca. Today the column here is a replica located on the corner of a business with an image of Saint Vincent Ferrer. The original is in the Archaeological Museum of Lorca. During the middle ages, Lorca became a border city between the Christian Kingdoms of Murcia and the Emirate of Granada. During this era, the Muslims constructed the Castle of Lorca to protect the town. In 1452 the city would become a noble city part of the Kingdom of Murcia, and it would take its modern shape.

Come upon the constructions of this era by visiting the San Patricio Collegiate, one of the essential religious construction of the city, built in the XVI century in Renaissance style, or visit the Ayuntamiento de Lorca, a building from the XVII to be a jail but today is the city town hall.
