Located within the historic district of Madrid, Retiro, with its six neighborhoods, is one of the city’s most visited areas and a great starting point to discover one of the greatest capital cities in Spain and Europe. This historical district was home to the former Palace of El Buen Retiro, owned by the Spanish nobility during the XVIII century. Later was occupied and used as a fortress and barracks by Napoleon’s army during the Independence War of Spain between 1808 and 1814. After the victory of the Spanish army, the palace ended up damaged. Several parts of it were demolished, but some of the gardens remained, and later the state bought it and transformed it into a public area for all the people to use and enjoy.
Now El Retiro Park is one of Europe’s most famous and beautiful parks. Its walkable areas and landscapes made this park one of the lungs of Madrid, a place for enjoyment and culture in this capital city. Here you will find the Velázquez Palace, a contemporary art museum in a neoclassical building from the XIX century, and the famous Palacio de Cristal, a structure made of glass and iron in the late XIX century now used for temporary exhibitions part of the National Museum and Art Center Reina Sofía.
