Neighborhoods – What to Know, Before Visiting

Discover a unique district of Madrid and discover its attractions in the heart of Spain’s capital. See the Atletico de Madrid Metropolitan stadium, it is highly recommended for any sports fan, but San Blas-Canillejas has so much more to offer visitors willing to explore the area. The area is split between 7 “barrios,” each with unique offerings.

Salvador – A Perfect Visit for Families

Home to Parque Quinta de los Molinos, Salvador is an up-and-coming trendy area with nice eateries and an important cultural center. Parque Quinta de los Molinos is a former royal estate turned park.

It is an excellent escape from the bustling city and the perfect place to picnic, read a book, or bring your children to play. To see it in all its glory, pay a visit in February or March when its famous almonds trees are in full blossom. To the north of the park, you will find the wondrous Espacio Abierto Quinta de los Molinos, a cultural space designed for children of all ages. Its focus is on stimulating the creativity of children, and the center has an ongoing program of activities and events that are not to be missed.

Its activities and facilities, including an indoor playground, are free. The building also houses the lovely La Quinta Cocina, a café/restaurant which employs young people at risk of exclusion and serves excellent coffee and fantastic food.

A short walk away to the east of Parque Quinta de los Molinos, you will come across neighboring Parque de la Quinta de Torre Arias, a park that has a sprawl of oaks, pines, and cedars around a derelict, centuries-old palace. The Torre Alias Palace dates from the late 16th century and is worth a visit. The building has a ballroom, chapel, and various outbuildings, including a winery and stables. In the evening, take a stroll west of Parque Quinta de los Molinos along Calle Lopez de Aranda, a tree-laden street with some fantastic restaurants.

Restaurante Aranda Madrid serves traditional Spanish dishes with a modern twist, all in an elegant contemporary space. A little further down the road, Restaurante Madrida serves mouthwatering food and has a highly recommended daily menu at an affordable price. Or why not head around the corner to Aboca Restobar, where all the family can indulge in delicious pizzas and scrumptious desserts. All of this makes Salvador an excellent place to stay for families!

Barrio de Cultura

San Blas-Canillejas is an excellent place to enjoy live music, theatre, and cultural activities. For a relatively small area, the amount of music venues and cultural centers is very surprising and is a testament to how much the area offers visitors. For the latest news on what is happening in the area, head to the Madrid Cultura website for a complete list of exhibitions, concerts, and other events. A few places of special mention are Centro Cultural Buero Vallejo and Centro Cultural Ciudad Pegaso, both of which offer an eclectic mix of activities.

Perhaps the area’s two most significant cultural offerings take place in Parque El Paraíso. This park has a vast outdoor amphitheater perfect for community fairs and concerts. San Jazz takes place here each June. It is a free festival with various concerts over two evenings and celebrates the best in Jazz, Soul, Funky, and Gospel music. Later in the year, Festival SBC takes place in September and brings together some of the biggest names in Spanish Rock, Folk, Soul, and more. Events occur over two days, and some concerts also take place at Auditorio Parque Canillejas, so be sure to check out the program before planning your visit.

Close to Auditorio Parque Canillejas, the Santa María la Blanca church makes for a slightly different cultural visit. The church is notable for its wooden lattice ceilings carved in the mid-16th century in the Mudéjar style, which were hidden under a plaster vault for hundreds of years and were uncovered in 2020.

Home of “Los Colcheneros”

Experience one of the most popular football teams in the world and enjoy the local fever for this sport in San Blas. Discover “Los Colcheneros” (Mattress makers), as Atletico de Madrid are affectionately known due to their first team stripes being the same colors as traditional mattresses. They are Madrid’s second team as a result of their neighbors’ undoubted claim to be the world’s most successful football team. Nevertheless, few would whisper such comments when visiting the magnificent Wanda Metropolitano, a 68,000+ seater stadium that reopened in 2017 and is home to some of the most vociferous supporters in Spain.

Any sports fan deserves to experience a trip to this stadium, if not for the football, solely for the passion and energy that explodes on a match day. Tickets start from 30 Euros, and you can arrive at the stadium by taking the subway from San Blas subway station for two stops. There is also a range of bars and food offerings nearby. Although none of them afford a special mention, they will be the perfect accompaniment to an afternoon watching Atletico de Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Where to Stay on a Budget

Being outside the city center, San Blas-Canillejas offers many affordable options for someone traveling on a budget. With excellent transport links to the rest of the capital, it is a great place to base oneself, and you will experience a side of Madrid that few other foreigners get to explore.

Try staying close to Simancas subway station. You will have access to other parts of the city, including the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium. You will also have supermarkets such as Supermercados Dia on your doorstep as well as local restaurants such as Bar Restaurante Los Peques, offering excellent food at a great price. Another option is to find accommodation close to Torre Arias subway station. Once again, you will have good access to the rest of the city with a direct line straight to the center, Parque Quinta de los Molinos and Parque de la Quinta de Torre Arias will be minutes away. You will also have affordable options for food with supermarkets such as Mercadona easily accessible.
