A heroic island. – What to know before visiting

San Fernando is in the Bay of Cadiz, a historic spot with tremendous amounts of history and the passing of many civilizations. In the area, there were early inhabitants since the paleolithic. Still, since the arrival of the Phoenicians in the II millennium BCE, many cultures have used the site for fish curing. Later during the VI century, Cartage occupied the area and started building temples and other edifications like the Hornos púnicos y fenicios de San Fernando, a set of ovens dedicated to producing amphorae to carry the cured fish once finished. Next, the Romans occupied the island in 206 BCE. You can see the remnants of the roman construction in Pozo de la Curia Romana near one of the most popular beaches of San Fernando, Playa de Camposoto, and also in the early origins of Puente Zuazo (rebuilt later under the Catholic Monarchs).

The Castillo de San Romualdo was constructed during the Arab Occupation circa 711, but there is no concrete dating period for this, but the Muslim influence is evident. During the Catholic Monarchs era, the town grew as a port dedicated to naval commerce. From then on, the City had a vibrant maritime industry known as León. Many constructuosnof civil infrastructures happened due to the strategic importance for trade, such as Ayuntamiento de San Fernando from the late XVIII century, the Real Carenero from the XVI century, and the Real Teatro de las Cortes from the early XIX century and key in the formation of modern-day Spain. Here in this theater was drafted the first Spanish Constitution in 1812, during the French occupation in the Napoleonic Wars, and the third oldest Constitution in the world. The defense of the City during this tumultuous time granted the title of City and changed its name to San Fernando.

Now the City of San Fernando is an excellent spot to discover the naval history of Spain. Fall in love with this side of the past and what it represents for the Spanish. Come to San Fernando and enjoy its great spots and unique culture on the southern coast of Spain.
