Neighborhoods – What to Know, Before Visiting

Discover the unique district of Tetuán in the heart of Madrid, and see its unique architecture and city culture. Calle de Bravo Murillo is a marker that cuts in the middle of old and new Tetuán. To the west, you have the winding alleys of the traditionally working-class neighborhood. This part of Tetuán is probably the best example in the capital where the Neo-Mudejar architectural style can be appreciated. The Neo-Mudejar architectural style is a fusion of traditional Spanish and Islamic architecture resulting from nearly 700 years of Muslim rule in Spain between the 8th and 15th centuries. This style can be seen in many of the great cities of Spain, and Tetuán, Madrid, is no exception. Walking around the streets, you can see over 100 examples of Neo-Mudejar houses built in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

To the west of Calle de Bravo Murillo, the broad avenues of the business district begin, and here you will see a significant change in the neighborhood’s architecture, wealth, and feel. For visitors, this is where you will concentrate most of your time. However, a visit to the older, more residential side of Tetuán should not be missed.

Right on the precipice of old and new Tetuán is the Mercado de Maravillas. The Municipal Market is the largest in Madrid and one of the largest in Europe. It has been the primary market in Tetuán since 1942 and has recently undergone a transformation. The market offers a great atmosphere to visitors, and you can find excellent products at very affordable prices. The market also contains a number of eateries serving food from different parts of the world. Some of the most highly recommended eateries are the Venezuelan and Peruvian stalls, where you can eat famous dishes such as empanadas or ceviche.

Activities to Enjoy as a Family

Tetuán has everything for a perfect family stay. One of the main attractions is the Parque de La Ventilla is a great little escape from the noise and traffic of the big city. Bounded by the streets Sinesio Delgado, Avenida de Asturias, Vía Limite, and Calle Magnolias, the park is a refreshing break from the rest of the city. It has excellent facilities for families with children. The park has a good children’s playground and a basketball and football court. One of the best parts is the picnic area, where you can enjoy a nice lunch in the shade of one of the many pine trees that you will find in the park. The park also has a leafy 1.5 km path, perfect for cycling or walking.

The Museo Tiflológico is a small museum entirely/for visually impaired and blind people. Several models of historical buildings (in Spain and beyond) can be found here. The museum also displays work done by blind/visually impaired artists. This is a museum where the pieces are seen and reads through touch. In addition, you can also learn about the evolution of different writing systems prior to and simultaneous to braille. It is a very interesting visit for all the family and is free to enter.

Stylish Castillejos

Find the luxury accommodation you are looking for near Castillejos. This area is the vibrant commercial center of Tetuán. Beginning with Plaza Castilla in the north, the area is packed full of luxury accommodations, superb restaurants, upscale fashion outlets, and interesting galleries. Two of Madrid’s most iconic corporate buildings can be found in the Plaza Castilla. Calatrava’s Caja Madrid Obelisk and the leaning Puerta de Europa office towers are two striking examples of modern architecture and make for a very interesting visit.

Travel south down Paseo de la Castellana, and you will come to Santana Art Gallery, one of the best galleries in the city, which also holds numerous cultural events throughout the year. Look at their website to see what’s on during your visit.

From Santana Art Gallery, cross over Paseo de la Castellana, and you will come to the bustling streets of Castillejos, full of shops, bars, eateries, nightclubs, and much more. Here you will also find some fantastic restaurants. For a blend of Asian and Mediterranean flavors, head over to Mitiko. They will inspire and amaze you with their excellent dishes, which are only enhanced by the restaurant’s great ambiance and impeccable service. Or if you fancy a more intimate setting, try Masa Naomi, possibly the best Japanese food in the capital. The atmosphere is authentically Japanese, and the food they serve is superb.

Cultural Activities on Offer

Find great cultural spots in Tutuán during your stay. Away from Castillejos, in the northwest of the neighborhood, you will find two unique spaces offering some of the best cultural activities in the area. Nave Maria is a cultural hub where you can spend hours participating in the events and exhibitions they regularly provide. It includes a warehouse full of plants and vintage decoration, and it also houses a small patio, a greenhouse, an orchard, and even an indoor pool. One of its main programs is Casa Consciente, a space for conversation, workshops, movie evenings, and courses. During the summer, there is also a highly recommended restaurant at the center that employs young people at risk of exclusion.

Around a 10 minutes walk from Nave Maria is Espacio Garaje Lola, a creative multi-space offering affordable rents to local artists. It also has an extremely interesting cultural program, including theater, concerts, and various talks.

Where to Stay on a Budget

If you’re on a budget, try staying in the barrio of Bellas Vistas. Here you will experience the authentic side of Tetuán, and excellent transport links will give you the option to explore the rest of the city. In Bellas Vistas, you will be able to enjoy the classic Neo-Mudejar architecture of the neighborhood, and there are some great affordable restaurants such as El Rincón Del Venezolano, cooking authentic Latin American flavors, and Mesón Los Aros II, which serves delicious, traditional tapas. There are a number of well-priced accommodations in Bellas Vistas, so you won’t have to look hard to find something within your budget.
