Sea and salt. – What to know before visiting

Torrevieja is a seaside city with a long history related to its pink salt lakes. Its history dates before the XIII century, when salt extraction in the area’s lagoons started. It was until 1803 that King Charles IV authorized the development of the site and the construction of houses in this area. An earthquake in 1829 destroyed the remnants of an old lighthouse that gave the name to the city and destroyed the early developments of the area’s inhabitants. Today Torrevieja has one of the most extensive salt commerce in Europe, but also a remarkable preservation of its natural sites and a rich culture related to the Mediterranean Sea.
